Custodian
REPORTS TO: Facility and Grounds Supervisor/Evening Custodial Supervisor
NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB: To provide a safe, clean and comfortable school environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Custodian shall:
Have experience in institutional cleaning practices.
Hold a valid State of New Jersey issued driver’s license, CDL preferred but not required.
Have the ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
Have knowledge of plant operation and maintenance; cleaning methods and procedures; heating and ventilation; proper handling of hazardous materials
Be in good physical health and ability to perform assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Have a minimum of one year of verifiable previous work related experience.
Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education, or, during the initial six month period provide a sworn statement that there have not been any convictions of a crime or a disorderly persons offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
Provide information that includes current/former employers within the last twenty (20) years in which the employment involved direct contact with children; a written authorization that consents to current and former employers disclosing certain information; and a written statement as to whether the applicant has any employment history regarding child abuse and/or sexual misconduct in accordance with N.J.S.A.18A:6-7.6.
Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
Pass the State required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Custodian shall:
Open/close the building each day. Determines, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and parking lots free of debris and rubbish.
Operate heat, ventilation and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water and electricity.
Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are free for egress during emergencies during the hours of building occupancy.
Display the American Flag during school hours when school is in session.
Clean and dust classrooms, shops, offices and assigned areas daily; empties waste baskets in those areas.
Clean assigned corridors after each school day and during the day when their condition requires it.
Clean and sanitize assigned bathroom fixtures and floors daily and replenishes paper and soap supplies as needed.
Clean and sanitize all drinking fountains daily.
Clean student and staff cafeteria dining areas after each use. Empties eating area trash receptacles.
Shovel, plow, salt and/or sweep sidewalks, steps, driveways and parking areas as needed and directed.
Obey all fire/safety and environmental laws and regulations relating to the school operation.
Keep the grounds free from rubbish and debris.
Move furniture or equipment within the building required for various activities and as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor or Principal.
Comply with all laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, recycling, waste and debris.
Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep and repair, making minor repairs and reporting major repair issues promptly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Clean all windows on both inside and outside as scheduled.
Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
May be assigned to participate in grounds keeping chores including grass-cutting, tree trimming, leaf raking and removal of litter, to maintain the grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
Responds to job related call-backs and overtime assignments as determined by Supervisor.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Continuously use hand strength to grasp tools and climb on to ladders.
Frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk.
Push/Pull items, such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.
Speak and hear.
Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision.
Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated and non-air conditioned facilities.
Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment.
Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
Exposure to fumes from various art materials.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Work year of twelve months.
Salary or hourly wage, benefits, and leave time as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Conditions established by all laws and codes of the State and all policies, rules, and regulations established by the Board of Education (N.J.S.A. 18A:27-4 et seq.).
