Postdoctoral Scholar MatSE

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences of the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position to begin on or after August 1, 2024. The position will focus on Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) to study polymer electrolytes, with a special interest in machine learning accelerated methods such as Neural Network potentials and physics-based potentials parameterized with machine learning methods. This work will be performed as part of the ongoing “Fast and Cooperative Ion Transport in Polymer-Based Electrolytes” (FaCT), a Department of Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC).

Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral scholar will interact with leading researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and partner academic institutions to,
  • Perform simulations that provide insight into material systems of interest.
  • Propose new materials of interest to our synthesis team based on simulation results.


Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field by the start of the position.
  • A successful candidate should have a strong record of related research experience in computational materials science, computational chemistry, and/or applied machine learning.
  • Extensive programming experience is required and familiarity with Density Functional Theory, MD, and/or AIMD is strongly preferred.

This is a postdoctoral position funded for one year from the date of hire, with an excellent possibility of renewal pending available funding and satisfactory performance.

The position is based in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, working under the joint supervision of Professors Susan B. Sinnott and Wesley Reinhart. There will also be opportunities to collaborate and interact with a large group of faculty, staff scientists, and students across the FaCT Center. As the position involves no responsibilities with physical laboratory equipment, flexible work arrangements, including hybrid and remote, will be considered on a case-by-case basis (with occasional travel to the University Park campus and Oak Ridge National Laboratory required).
