Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)

SUMMARY:
Position is responsible for mixing Chemotherapeutic and/or other infused drugs, managing inventory as it relates to outpatient oncology infusion products. Implementation, operation, and maintenance of all medication related technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Reviews physician orders for completeness; transcribes appropriate information through computer order entry to generate patient medication profile by using pharmaceutical/medical terminology, symbols & abbreviations.
Selects & prepares medications & pharmaceutical products by name & dosage listed on physician's order, places merchandise in proper container w/ correct label, makes required notations & initials physician's order.
Reviews physician's orders & patient medical record in order to determine whether allergies, sensitivities and/or interactions have been documented.
Alerts nursing personnel when computer indicates that prescribed medication may be contraindicated due to drug allergies, sensitivities or interactions.
Prioritizes work flow to meet the operational needs of the pharmacy.
Maintains pharmacy inventory in designated areas. Reviews pharmacy inventory for medications to be returned (i.e., expired/outdated products, deteriorated products, illegible labels, etc). Procures, orders, receives, stocks & returns merchandise following established procedures.
Prepares pharmacy products by demonstrating a knowledge of quality control.
Participates in quality assurance & Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes.
Operates & maintains specialized pharmacy equipment by assembling, disassembling, cleaning, preparing for sterilization, changing filters, making minor repairs as needed & performing & documenting periodic checks & adjustments. Charts all scheduled maintenance designed to insure sterility according to protocol.
Participates in assigned education, training programs & departmental meetings as required.
Keeps assigned work area & equipment in an organized & clean condition & maintains supporting documentation. Maintains a safe, secure & efficient work environment.
Answers, makes telephone calls & retrieves voice mail messages consistent w/ assigned duties in accordance w/ telephone access standards.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Competency in data analysis, critical thinking skills, and handling hazardous medications is required. An understanding of all federal, state, and local rules and regulations as they pertain to hazardous medications is required

EDUCATION:
High School Diploma Required; Completion of approved Pharmacy Technician program preferred; Currently working at least 40 hours per week. Professional Certification Required; Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the State Board of Pharmacy. Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) status required with documentation of continued education.
